This time last year, we were optimistic about the start of a new decade and wondering what significance this may signal in terms of world history. This time last year, of course, none of us had any idea what lay ahead. I’m sure that 2020 has been the most unusual and challenging year any of us can recall, as COVID disrupted our lives, our families, our work, and our businesses.
In many ways, as we close out the year, we reflect on how lucky we have been in Australia compared to the experience elsewhere in the world. Then we get reminders, like in the Northern Beaches, that this pandemic is not behind us just yet.
Nevertheless, we can be optimistic as we head into 2021. The impacts have not been as grave as first feared. The development of vaccines in record time is a reason for hope around the world for a solution to the health crisis and a genuine economic recovery to take hold.
For that, we can pause to reflect at the end of 2020, to have gratitude for many things, but also to give thought to our family and friends everywhere. We are indeed living in the lucky country!
I wish everyone a very happy and safe Christmas and a great 2021 ahead!
